Thailand has been a safe haven for people living in Hong Kong who wants to get away for a shorter or longer period of time. However, last week there was an announcement that travelers from Hong Kong would have to undergo 2 weeks of self-quarantine upon arrival. This was later withdrawn, reissues and redrawn, before it all got clear as mud.
The official rules for entry to Thailand right now are as follows:
- Passengers arriving from Hong Kong and Macao may be required to self-quarantine for 14-days upon arrival.
- Passengers intending to stay less than 14 days can still travel to Thailand but may be required to self-quarantine at their hotel or residence during their stay.
- Exemptions: Passengers arriving in Thailand via Hong Kong will be exempt from the 14-day self-quarantine on arrival. This does not apply to people originally traveling from South Korea, Italy and Iran .
Again, the rule says ‘may be required to self-quarantine’ – making it just as muddy as it was before.
Unfortunately, this is all the official information that is available. However, I have been in contact with several people who have flown from Hong Kong to Thailand in the past couple of days, and they all report that they just have to do a health declaration form upon arrival, and that’s it – there has not been any talk about quarantine for anyone so far to the best of my knowledge.
According to sources who are familiar with what is happening in Thailand, there is no quarantine for anyone arriving so far, however, the health authorities are supposed to have a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday the 10th, to discuss further implementation of restrictions on visitors. I will post any updates here as soon as they become available, but for now it seems Thailand is business as usual, and there is no reason not to go there.
Has anyone reading this had any other experience traveling to Thailand lately, or has anyone canceled their planned trips from fear of quarantine?
