Traffic numbers at Hong Kong International Airport continues to drop

In August traffic numbers at HKIA dropped by 3.5% compared to August the year before, and the numbers for September has just been released.

The total traffic numbers at Hong Kong International Airport for September 2019 was 33.390, down 1% compared to September last year. This gives a daily average of 1.113 aircraft movements.

The passenger numbers were 4.834.000, down 12.7% from September last year.

The freight was 397.000 tonnes, down 6.2% from the year before.

As we can see, the aircraft numbers have not dropped as significantly as the month before, but the 12.7% drop in passenger numbers is severe. I have noticed a lot of operators are bringing in smaller aircraft than they used to, and frequency of some routes have dropped as well, and I am sure Cathay will be doing a lot of adjustments for their winter schedule to react to this – it will be very interesting to see if this trend will be continuing in the next few months.
