According to provisional civil international air traffic statistics at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for May 2022, there was a significant increase in the number of passengers, with a total of 170,000 passengers compared to 59,000 in May 2021, representing a 186.1% increase. This marks a continued trend of growth in passenger numbers at HKIA.
In terms of cargo handled, there was a slight decrease in the amount of cargo unloaded, with 129,000 tonnes in May 2021 compared to 127,000 in May 2022, and a significant decrease in the amount of cargo loaded, with 275,000 tonnes in May 2021 compared to 238,000 in May 2022. This resulted in a total decrease of 9.7% in the amount of cargo handled at HKIA, with 404,000 tonnes in May 2021 compared to 365,000 in May 2022.
There was also a decrease in the number of passenger flights at HKIA in May 2022 compared to the previous year, with a decrease of 16.9%, or 4,229 flights in May 2021 compared to 3,515 in May 2022. However, there was an increase in the number of cargo flights, with 6,412 in May 2021 compared to 6,590 in May 2022, an increase of 2.8%. The number of non-revenue flights also increased by 45.7%, with 230 flights in May 2021 compared to 335 in May 2022. Overall, there was a decrease of 4.0% in the total number of flight movements at HKIA, with 10,871 in May 2021 compared to 10,440 in May 2022.
