June 2025: Hong Kong International Airport Passenger Growth Softens as Japan Demand Eases

June 2025 at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) was a step down from May on passenger numbers and movements, with cargo also a little softer year-on-year. Transfer and transit traffic still helped, but Japan demand was weaker. Severe Typhoon Champi: more than 70 Hong Kong–Taiwan flights cancelled on 23 October

Severe Typhoon Champi forced the cancellation of more than 70 flights between Hong Kong International Airport and Taiwan on Friday 23 October 2026, with further cuts on some Japan services as the storm closed in on Taiwan.

May 2025: Hong Kong International Airport Holds Strong Passenger Growth After Easter Peak

May 2025 at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) was a calmer step down from the Easter peak in April, but still well ahead of the same month a year earlier. Passenger numbers and flight movements both grew in solid year-on-year terms, while cargo edged up a little. Super Typhoon Champi — Hong Kong flights to Taiwan and Japan disrupted (HKIA open, no local TC signal)

Super Typhoon Champi (薔琵) has been one of the stronger Pacific storms of 2026, but it is not bringing a Hong Kong signal ladder to Chek Lap Kok. As of late evening Thursday 22 October, the Hong Kong Observatory had Champi centred about 1.120 km east of Hong Kong (Severe Typhoon, ~175 km/h near centre at 20:00 HKT), forecast to move toward the seas east of Taiwan. Locally the weather is fine, hot and very dry — no Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1 or above is in force for Hong Kong.

HKIA itself is open as usual tonight — the pain is on Taiwan and Japan routes, not a local T8 shutdown.

Review – The Pier, Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge, Hong Kong, January 2025.

The visit to this lounge was part of a 5 night trip I made to Bangkok to visit my parents there. I had booked an award ticket in Business Class with Cathay Pacific for 12.000 miles if I remember correctly, which allowed me lounge access. As my flight was leaving from Gate 40, I choose to use The Pier Business Class lounge, as it is not too far from the gate.
