June 2025: Hong Kong International Airport Passenger Growth Softens as Japan Demand Eases

June 2025 at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) was a step down from May on passenger numbers and movements, with cargo also a little softer year-on-year. Transfer and transit traffic still helped, but Japan demand was weaker. Below are the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) figures for the month, with a bit of colour from the Airport Authority where it helps.

Passenger Traffic: Softer Month, Transfer Traffic Still Helping

According to CAD, HKIA handled 4.742.193 passengers in June 2025, a +11.0% increase on June 2024 (4.272.955). Arrivals were 2.378.994 and departures 2.363.199.

Month-on-month, that is about -1.9% below May 2025’s 4.836.036 passengers.

The Airport Authority’s rounded headline was about 4.76 million passengers (+11.2% year-on-year). The small gap versus CAD is just rounding and presentation; I use CAD as the precise source here. Growth mainly from transfer/transit passengers; overall traffic impacted by reduced demand for travel to Japan.

On a longer view (AAHK): Jan–Jun 2025 came to about 29.4 million passengers (+16.5% year-on-year), with flight movements about 192.365 (+10.1%), and cargo about 2.4 million tonnes (+1.9%). The rolling twelve months were about 57.2 million passengers (+18.6%), 380.915 movements (+14.7%), and about 4.98 million tonnes of cargo (+6.3%).

Cargo Handling: Softer Year-on-Year

CAD recorded 406.364 tonnes of air cargo in June 2025, a −1.7% decrease on June 2024 (413.536 tonnes). Loaded cargo was 299.126 tonnes; unloaded 107.238 tonnes. (CAD’s freight figures exclude air mail.)

Compared with May 2025’s 420.043 tonnes, June was down about −3.3% month-on-month.

AAHK rounded the June total to about 409.000 tonnes (-1.6% year-on-year). North America declines partially offset by growth to/from Europe and the Middle East.

Flight Movements: Year-on-Year Climb Continues

CAD counted 31.228 civil international flight movements at HKIA in June 2025 (15.602 landings and 15.626 take-offs), a +5.5% increase on June 2024’s 29.587.

Month-on-month, movements were about -3.8% below May 2025 (32.478).

AAHK’s rounded figure was 31.235 movements (+5.6% year-on-year). Same story as CAD, slight presentation difference.

CAD’s monthly workbook does not split June into passenger, cargo and non-revenue movements, and the Airport Authority release gives the total only — so no invented breakdown this time either.

Conclusion

June 2025 looks like a softer patch for HKIA after May: passengers still up about 11% year-on-year but down month-on-month, cargo slightly below June 2024, and movements up mid-single digits. Transfer/transit helped on the passenger side; Europe and the Middle East again on cargo, against weaker North America and softer Japan leisure demand.
