July 2025: Hong Kong International Airport Keeps Growing Through Weather and Softer Japan Traffic

July 2025 at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) kept the year-on-year climb going on passengers, cargo and movements, even with adverse weather and softer Japan demand in the mix. Below are the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) figures for the month, with a bit of colour from the Airport Authority where it helps.

Passenger Traffic: Still Growing Despite Weather and Japan Softness

According to CAD, HKIA handled 5.180.973 passengers in July 2025, a +9.4% increase on July 2024 (4.737.005). Arrivals were 2.569.042 and departures 2.611.931.

Month-on-month, that is about +9.3% above June 2025’s 4.742.193 passengers.

The Airport Authority’s rounded headline was about 5.2 million passengers (+9.7% year-on-year). The small gap versus CAD is just rounding and presentation; I use CAD as the precise source here. Transfer/transit still growing from a low base; overall growth softened by adverse weather and weaker Japan demand.

On a longer view (AAHK): Jan–Jul 2025 came to about 34.6 million passengers (+15.3% year-on-year), with flight movements about 226.020 (+9.8%), and cargo about 2.83 million tonnes (+2.2%). The rolling twelve months were about 57.6 million passengers (+17.3%), 383.450 movements (+13.1%), and about 5.0 million tonnes of cargo (+5.4%).

Notable additions include Munich, Rome and Brussels in Europe; Subang in Southeast Asia; Yiwu and Datong in Mainland China.

Cargo Handling: Still Growing Year-on-Year

CAD recorded 428.130 tonnes of air cargo in July 2025, a +4.0% increase on July 2024 (411.519 tonnes). Loaded cargo was 314.662 tonnes; unloaded 113.468 tonnes. (CAD’s freight figures exclude air mail.)

Compared with June 2025’s 406.364 tonnes, July was up about +5.4% month-on-month.

AAHK rounded the July total to about 430.000 tonnes (+3.9% year-on-year). Stronger Europe and Middle East offset North America declines.

Flight Movements: Year-on-Year Climb Continues

CAD counted 33.668 civil international flight movements at HKIA in July 2025 (16.828 landings and 16.840 take-offs), a +8.3% increase on July 2024’s 31.098.

Month-on-month, movements were about +7.8% above June 2025 (31.228).

AAHK’s rounded figure was 33.670 movements (+8.3% year-on-year). Same story as CAD, slight presentation difference.

CAD’s monthly workbook does not split July into passenger, cargo and non-revenue movements, and the Airport Authority release gives the total only — so no invented breakdown this time either.

Conclusion

July 2025 kept HKIA on a growth path: passengers and movements up high single digits year-on-year, cargo up about 4%. Weather and Japan demand took some shine off the passenger rate, while Europe and the Middle East carried cargo. New European and Mainland routes fit the longer rebuild story.
