With the outbreak of Covid-19 and the effect it had on aviation two years ago, Cathay Pacific parked a lot of their aircrafts for a long time. Initially they were parked at Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong as you can see on the picture above, and they slowly moved them to a long term parkin in the desert in Alice Springs in Australia.
Cathay has now announced that they are planning on bringing their fleet back to Hong Kong, so I hope that it means that they are expecting travel restrictions in Hong Kong to be significantly reduces or even removed over the next few months.
Currently around one third of Cathays fleet is parked in Alice Springs. Cathay has a fleet of around 150 aircrafts, so that means about 50 of them are currently parked and waiting to be brought back to Hong Kong. This should also mean that we can expect to see a significant increase of flights by Cathay Pacific. Pre-pandemic they operated passenger flights to around 110, whereas now they only operate to around 45. The lowest number they operated during the pandemic was 30, so there has already been an increase from that, and from what I understand Cathay is now planning on increasing that number to 75 this year.
