Cathay Pacific opens Hong Kong–Almaty — first flight 9 January 2027

Cathay Pacific has opened bookings for a new Hong Kong–Almaty route, with the first flight set for 9 January 2027. It will be Cathay’s first destination in Central Asia, and for now the only direct passenger link between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan — which is the part that actually matters if you have been looking at Central Asia from HKG and hitting a wall of connections.

Air Astana operated Almaty–Hong Kong before COVID. On 6 March 2020 the airline said that day’s ALA–HKG flight would be the last before the service was suspended, and the route never restarted — so Hong Kong has been without a direct passenger link to Kazakhstan for about seven years. Cathay filling that gap on its own metal is the interesting bit.

Cathay first floated the plan back in June 2026 during the HKSAR Central Asia visit: three flights a week on an Airbus A330-300. The booking-open announcement now locks in the January start date and the flight numbers. Times are local and still subject to regulatory approval, as usual for a new route.

The schedule (Tue / Thu / Sat)

CX681: HKG 16:25 → ALA 20:30
CX680: ALA 21:50 → HKG 07:00+1

Outbound leaves Hong Kong mid-afternoon and gets you into Almaty in the evening, which is workable if you are heading straight to a hotel. The return is a late evening departure and a morning arrival back at Chek Lap Kok — the classic overnight sector, so pack for sleep rather than expecting a full day on either end.

The launch fare

Cathay’s Discover Almaty offer page is quoting round-trip fares from HKD 4.089* (taxes and carrier surcharges included), with a book-by date of 30 November 2026, and a one-way promo fare as well if you want to mix and match. As always with the asterisk: terms apply, fares move, and inventing a “I found HKD X on this date” number without checking the engine for your own dates would just be guessing. The offer page is here: Discover Almaty.

Why this one is interesting from Hong Kong

Until now, Hong Kong–Kazakhstan meant a connection somewhere else. A thrice-weekly A330 puts Almaty on the board as a proper nonstop — useful for winter (Shymbulak is right there), for the mountains and canyons around the city, and as a gateway if Central Asia is the wider plan. Cathay also flagged the Asian Winter Games in 2029 when they announced the route in June, so this is clearly meant as more than a one-season experiment.

If you want a feel for the metal Cathay is planning to put on the route, I have written up a couple of A330 trips already — A330-300 economy Bangkok–Hong Kong (February 2020) and A330 business Hong Kong–Bangkok (January 2025). The rest of my Cathay write-ups sit under the airline reviews collection.

A few practical notes if you book

Confirm the live schedule and fare rules on cathaypacific.com before you commit — launch routes can still shift timings, and the HKD 4.089* level will not sit on every date. The A330-300 plan comes from the June 2026 announcement (and industry schedules are showing the 293-seater), so check the aircraft type on your booking if that matters for your seat map. And yes, “subject to regulatory approval” is still on the press note, even with bookings open.

Overall, a proper new blue-tail destination rather than another short-haul shuffle: first Central Asia city for Cathay, only direct HKG–Kazakhstan passenger flight for now, three days a week on an A330, and a launch fare that is worth a look before the end of November if Almaty was already somewhere in the back of your mind. I will keep an eye on how the route settles after 9 January.
