August 2024: Hong Kong International Airport Records Peak Passenger Traffic and Steady Cargo Growth


August 2024 was another strong month for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), with record passenger numbers and consistent cargo handling performance. Here’s a breakdown of the key figures for the month and how they compare to previous periods.

Passenger Traffic: A Record High for 2024

HKIA handled 4.92 million passengers in August 2024, a 23.0% increase compared to 4.0 million in August 2023. This is the highest monthly figure so far this year, driven by the peak summer travel season. Compared to July 2024’s 4.76 million, August saw a 3.3% month-on-month increase.

Passenger flight movements totaled 24,395, a 32.5% year-on-year increase from August 2023 and a slight uptick from July 2024’s 24,035 flights. The numbers reflect the robust recovery of international travel as Hong Kong continues to serve as a global hub.

Cargo Handling: Solid Growth

Cargo volumes at HKIA reached 406,000 tonnes in August 2024, reflecting a 10.6% year-on-year increase from 367,000 tonnes in August 2023. Loaded cargo grew by 13.6%, hitting 300,000 tonnes, while unloaded cargo increased modestly by 3.0%, reaching 106,000 tonnes.

Compared to July 2024’s 414,000 tonnes, August saw a slight 1.9% decline, consistent with seasonal trends. The 12-month cumulative cargo volume reached 4.78 million tonnes, a 15.9% year-on-year increase, underscoring HKIA’s role in global logistics.

Flight Movements: A Busy Month

Total flight movements in August 2024 were 31,605, a 26.1% increase compared to 25,070 flights in August 2023. Cargo flight movements increased by 7.2%, reaching 6,485 flights, while non-revenue flights grew by 18.7% to 725 flights.
