Will newcomer Greater Bay Airline be Hong Kong’s new operator?

It is quite rare nowdays with new airlines starting up, but The Civil Aviation Authorities of Hong Kong are processing the new airline’s application for an air operator certificate in Hong Kong.

The owner of the airline is Bill Wong Chu-bau, a Hong Kong resident who is also the owner of Senzhen-based airline Donghai.

Review – Cathay Pacific Business Class lounge, Manila.

The lounge in Manila was quite hard to locate, there were no (easily visible) signs pointing in the right direction, but after asking some of the terminal staff for directions I was finally able to locate it, upstairs from the main terminal at the end of a corridor. (It is located in Terminal 3, level 4, just above gate 114).

Koh Samui looking at slowly opening up for tourists again.

All of Thailand has been closed down for tourists for quite a while already, in an attempt to try to curb the Corona-pandemic. This has been very successful so far, and Thailand has so far only had 3381 cases and 58 deaths, and daily infections are in the single digits region.

According to Bangkok Post they are now considering to open up, although with quite severe restrictions, making a quick holiday there impossible. However, it will probably be a fairly popular option for senior citizens from northern Europe who normally spend a few months each winter in Thailand.

Emirates to deploy one-off A380 service to Clark on 19 August

Emirates have released the following press release:

Emirates will be operating a one-off A380 service to Clark International Airport on 19 August 2020, marking the first commercial flight, utilizing an A380 aircraft, to operate to Clark. The special flight will help to meet the demand for flights to and from the Philippines, especially serving passengers from the metro Manila and the surrounding Luzon areas and beyond.

Cathay Pacific reports record-high HK$9.9 billion loss in first half of 2020

This does probably not come as a surprise to anyone, but Cathay Pacific is loosing money fast. With a reported drop in passenger number of more than 98.5% compared to a year ago, it is basically only the cargo division that is bringing some cash in for the company.

Emirates cancels all passenger flights to Hong Kong UFN (again).

On March 25th, 2020, Emirates canceled all flights to Hong Kong UFN. This was in force until June 26th, when the started daily flights again, which lasted about 2 weeks until they reduces service to 3 per week in the middle of July, and now they have confirmed that they are cancelling all passenger flights to Hong Kong UFN.

It does indeed seem like the sun is setting for aviation in Hong Kong. The traffic numbers for June 2020 have been released, and I think it is no surprise that they are very similar to the numbers in May
