Civil International Air Traffic Statistics at HKIA in January 2022

After having almost reached 15.000 movements in November and December 2021, traffic in January of 2022 took a tumble again. The numbers were as follows:

  • Passenger numbers were the same as a year before, 71.000.
  • Cargo tonnes handeled were down 4.7% from 410.000 tonnes to 391.000 tonnes
  • Passenger flights were down 8.8% from 4,894 to 4.465
  • Cargo fligths were up 14.1% from 6.278 to 7.165
  • Non-revenue fligths were up 82.7% from 208 to 380
  • Total flight movements were up 5.5% compared to 2021 from 11.380 to 12.010, but down 2.500 since the month before.

Civil International Air Traffic Statistics at HKIA in February 2022

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw a significant increase in passenger traffic in February 2022, with 86,000 travelers passing through the airport. This represents a year-over-year (YoY) increase of 80.2% compared to the 48,000 passengers in February 2021.

Singapore Airlines resumes Airbus A380 operations between Hong Kong and Singapore

As a sign of traffic, aviation and traveling slowly resuming in Hong Kong, Singapore Airlines is now the 3rd operator to resume flights with their Airbus A380 into Hong Kong International Airport.

West Air starts flight to Hong Kong

Today’s new operator into Hong Kong was West Airs flight 8643 from Zhengzhou. The route was operated by an Airbus A321, and is also scheduled for a flight next Thursday. If this is a new ruote or just two test flights is not known, but it does seem like more and more operators are coming to Hong Kong – new and old ones alike.

Philippine Airlines to start Clark – Hong Kong flights.

I did not see this coming (at least not as the first airline to (re)-start this route, but Philippine Airlines will start operating Clark – Hong Kong three times weekly from December 9th. This is the first time (to my knowledge) that they will be operating this route. Pre-covid it was operated twice daily by Cebu Pacific and once daily by Dragonair, so I am sure the demand it there.

British Airways to resume passenger flights between London Heathrow and Hong Kong December 5, 2022.

British Airways has announced that they will resume daily flights between London Heathrow and Hong Kong effective December 5, 2022. They will for now operate a daily flight with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

British Airways used to operate two daily flights before the pandemic, one Boeing 777 and one Airbus A380, so we are quite far from the capacity they used back then, but this is still a sign of traffic starting to come back to Hong Kong now that arrival quarantine has been canceled.

Hong Kong Quarantine Ending!

Today it was finally announced that quarantine for arriving passengers to Hong Kong is ending, effective September 26, 2022. It has been about 2.5 years with travel restrictions in the city, and now we are getting as close to normal as we have been for a very long time.

Civil International Air Traffic Statistics at HKIA in July 2021

The Civil International Air Traffic Statistics for HKIA for July 2021 was as follows:

  • Passenger numbers were up 15.5% from 96.000 to 110.000 (first time above 100.000 since March 2020)
  • Cargo tonnes handeles was up 4.6% from 373.000 to 419.000
  • Passenger flight movements were up 50.9% from 3.621 to 5.465
  • Cargo flights movements were up 3.3% from 5.968 to 6.165
  • Non-revenue flights were down 22.5% from 284 to 220
  • Total flights movements were up 20% from 9.873 to 11.850

Loong Air starts operations to Hong Kong

Chinese airline Loong Air has started operations between Hong Kong and their hub in Hangzhou earlier in August 2022. As far as I know, this is the first time this airline has operated passenger flights into Hong Kong, and is one of the first new airlines to start flying to Hong Kong after aviation almost came to a halt due to Covis-19.

Hong Kong Government trials upgraded electronic health declaration system to enhance arrival quarantine procedures

In a press release today the Hong Kong Government announced that they are implementing an upgraded health declaration system for arriving passengers into Hong Kong in order to streamline the arrival process, and make both check-in and arrival procedures for passengers to Hong Kong easier.
