Hong Kong Airport gradually opens for transit passengers.

It was announced a couple of days ago that starting June 1st, Hong Kong Airport will again open up for transit passengers. While the restrictions were not initially published, we now know what some of those will be.

The following restrictions have been published:

  • Passengers can have a maximum connection time of 8 hours
  • You can only transit if you are on a single booking, meaning that you cannot connect if you are on separate tickets
  • Airlines have been told not to initially increase capacity, in order not to overwhelm the transit facilities
  • Transit to and from mainland China is not allowed.
  • All passengers will undergo temperature checks upon arrival.
  • Designated eating areas are set up for transit passengers, however, they are also told to go directly to their transit gates, so not sure how that is going to work?

It has not been published for how long this policy will last, but I expect we will see a gradual increase in flights and destinations over the next few weeks, and with restrictions being lifted relatively quickly as long as there is no new outbreak of COVID19 cases among the airport staff.
