I read in South China Morning Post yesterday that there are now talks about opening up for quarantine-free traveling between Hong Kong and Macau as soon as this month possibly (although I doubt it), but I thought anyways it was time to finish my last hotel review from Macau from 2020.
- Date of stay: January 21-22, 2020
- Room type: Deluxe Cotai Room (I think)
- Price: Free – As I normally gamble a bit when I go to Macau I earn enough points to redeem free rooms with some of the hotels there.
- Room number: Don’t remember.
I arrived at the hotel just after 1400, and the reception was packed full of people trying to check in. The Sheraton Cotai is the larges Sheraton hotel in the world, and also the largest hotel in Macau, with 4001 rooms and suites. At a guess there were over 500 people waiting to check in, so I was sure it would take a while. However, one of the ladies working there came up to me and asked if I was a Marriott Bonvoy member, which I am, and she took me to the members area check-in instead, and there it only took me 3 minutes before I was on my way to my room.
The room was to me a fairly standard room, and almost disappointing compared to my stay at the Conrad just two weeks earlier.
Entering the room there was a carpeted floor, and a bathroom directly to the left.
The bathroom had separate shower and bathtub, but the tub was too small for me to be able to fit into comfortably.
The toilet was behind the corner, and also standard.
In front of a large mirror there was a standard single sink, and a good selection of individually packed toiletries. Also in the shower there were single use soap, shampoo and conditioner, which I perfer.
The room itself consisted of a large, king size bed, a really comfortable chair by the window, a large screen TV and a standard office desk and chair.
The thing about the room that did impress me though was the view. Again I was given a room close to the corner of the building, and on a higher floor, so I had really nice view towards the Parisian hotel and Effiel Tower replica and the Studio City complex.
The minibar came reasonable stocked, and the prices were ok, slightly higher than in normal stores, but nothing extraordinary. Also, there was a kettle, tea and coffee, mugs, glassware and more free drinking water.
In the closed there was a standard safe, slippers, bath robes and a hotel price list. The off the rack rates for my room was 6083 HKD per night, so I am pretty happy to have gotten that for free.
After having looked around the room it was time for some gambling, but I had no luck and most of my budget for the 2 days was gone quickly. Spent the rest of the day looking around Cotai, and the next day after checking out I decided to go to Coloane village, as I had never looked around that area before, and it was a really pleasant surprise. This is what I had imagined old Macau looked like, with lots of old Portuguese buildings, old trees, all signs were still in Portuguese and so on. Spent a while looking around there, and the followed the road via Cheoc Van to Hac Sa.
After a great day of sightseeing and walking I made it back to the Sheraton Grand, and decided to do a little bit more gambling before I headed home, as I hadn’t made enough points yet to get another free stay, and I wanted to try to win back some of my losses. For once that was a good idea, and I could head to the cashier with a nice cashout for the day before getting on the bus back to Hong Kong close to midnight…
